Fabloid (aug. 2020)

Greetings from your favourite American living in the UK! I’m here on this ever changing journey called life (not sure if you all have heard of it or not?) and I want to share some bits and bobs with you every couple of months. As some of you might know, I always have A LOT to say, so these fabloids™ (or newsletters if you’d prefer) will be my way of letting you know what’s going on in my world and the world around me.

Since the start of the global pandemic, life has changed as we know it. There’s no more gigs, no more crowded pubs, hell, we can’t even share a slice of cake without contemplating whether or not we might be contracting a virus. Nothing will ever be the same and we all have to adjust to what is in store for our future. I’ve been collaborating with quite a few friends from across the world over the last couple of months, brainstorming on new and innovative ways to move forward and mostly, to just find a reason to keep on moving forward. What I’ve learned is that collaboration is one of the most important things we can do, not only as artists but as humans in general!

We weren’t built to do things alone; we need each other to survive, now more than ever. I want to create beautiful projects that make me happy and fill me with joy and that’s where my newest projects have come into play. Ginger Root Collective is a collective movement I’m starting. The goal of GRC is to bring like minded people together to create a supportive community for creatives of diverse backgrounds. I launched the collective last month with a first event for women to come together and speak about our collective experiences of what it was like to grow into womanhood via zoom. There will be a series of talks that I hope will just bring people with similar mindsets together and create a network that can help uplift each person involved.

Don’t worry, I’m still creating music! Music is at the core of who I am and why I even moved to the UK in the first place. Although I’m branching out from music with GRC and other side projects, all these things are helping me to grow as an artist, as a creative and as a business woman. I keep finding that the more I do, the more inspired I become and I really feel blessed in that way. Since the fiasco with the legalisation of my creative identity, I have gotten my title, “iamkyami” legally trademarked and I have also received an endorsement from the Arts Council England to permanently remain in the UK. Now that I’ve settled those really important business factors that were stopping me from moving forward in my career, I’m happy to announce that I will be releasing a new single with an incredible artist from North Carolina, USA, Sonny Miles. Slow Down is one of my most favourite tracks that I’ve created! I worked with co-producers Emma Bozson and Gili Goldberg, as I have done on previous tracks like Concrete Rose and Super Special. I would really recommend working with either of these lovely individuals, as they have really contributed a lot to the growth of my music and I wouldn’t be able to do it without them!

Slow Down drops late September with a super special limited edition t-shirt available to preorder from September 1st.
